Wildcats claw Rocket in pre-season battle

The P.E.I. Rocket surrendered three early powerplay goals in a 6-1 loss to the Moncton Wildcats in a pre-season tilt at the Charlottetown Civic Centre Sunday afternoon.
The Rocket end the pre-season with a 2-4-0-0 record.
"We have to be ready to compete every night," said Rocket rookie Alexis Pepin. "Friday night we competed and lost by a goal but today we didn't really compete and missed discipline."
The Wildcats were 3-for-10 with the extra man.
"That is why we have to stay disciplined because five-on-five we are hard to beat," said the the 16-year-old Pepin.
Dmitri Jaskin opened the scoring for the Wildcats with a powerplay goal at 7:17 before Brett Malone increased the lead with another powerplay goal 51 seconds later. James Melindy's powerplay goal at 15:07 gave Moncton a 3-0 lead. Ryan Penny scored 13 seconds later to put the Wildcats up by four goals.
Antoine Venne got the Rocket on the boardat 2:47 of the second period. Matt Bursey drew the lone assist. The Wildcats re-gained the four-goal margin with a goal from Yannick Veilleux.
In the third period, Russian sensation, Ivan Barbashev, rounded out the scoring at 11:27to give Moncton a 6-1 lead.
Wildcats goaltender Alex Dubeau picked up the win stopping 29 shots. Maxime Lagace took the loss in goal for the Rocket making 35 saves.
The Rocket kick off the regular season Friday Sept. 21 at home against the Moncton Wildcats at 7 p.m. Nathan MacKinnon and the Halifax Mooseheads are in town Sunday Sept. 23 for 3 p.m. tilt.
